Analysis: Melgar vs Atlético Mineiro (17 February 2016)

This Wednesday Melgar hosts Atlético Mineiro, at Mariano Melgar stadium in Arequipa, Peru. This game kicks off the first round of the group stage of Copa Libertadores 2016.

      Analysis of Melgar

Not a very traditional team in the Peruvian soccer, Melgar reaches Copa Libertadores for the third time and has yet to reach the knockout stage. To achieve that, the team will have to win the games at home. The team managed to achieve the spot after a great year at Campeonato Descentralizado 2015, where they were runner up in Apertura and Champions at Clausura, showing great form beating Real Garcilaso and Sporting Cristal to win it all.

For this season, the team manager, aware of how high the demand for a good squad is at Copa Libertadores, brought a few timely signings for the team, especially in the midfield. So far the start to the season hasn't been all that great. In the national championship, after 3 played matches, they have two wins outside from home and a loss at home. Now, in search of its first win at home of the season, coach Juan Reynoso should have all the athletes at his disposal.

      Analysis of Atlético Mineiro

Atlético Mineiro has been growing in the past few seasons. They were Libertadores champions in 2013 and is now one of Brazil's greats.Last year the team had an excellent year in the National Championship, where they almost ended up with the title, couldn't keep up with Corinthians and ended as runner up. For 2016, the team had a few changes but hopes to continue the great play in the international competition.

The main change the team faced was the new coach Diego Aguirre, called in to fill the spot left by Levir Culpi. In addition, the team lost only a few athletes and brought quality signings, like the forward Robinho. The start of the season has been good so far, no losses in official matches. So far, the only difficulties the team has been facing is that normal lack of rhythm to start the season. Hoping for a better exhibition in this debut and come home with 3 points, Diego Aguirre won't be able to play Robinho, still no ready to play, and Datolo and Thiago Ribeiro who are hurt. Also, Cazares will be out, as his documents aren't ready for play.

      Betting suggestion:

A match where both teams play style takes us to a more slower paced game and of quality defense. We should expect a slow game, with close to none scoring chances in the first half, where the teams will study each other. Nobody should try anything too risky in the, and the match should have a small number of goals, so a bet backing the draw in the first half is an excellent bet.
