Analysis: Chelsea vs Scunthorpe United (10 January 2016)

Chelsea and Scunthorpe United face at Stamford Bridge, in a match for this stage of the FA Cup (3rd Round). There is no record of official head‑to‑heads between these two teams in the last 3 years. The last time they met, on 08‑01‑2005, the match ended with the final score: Chelsea (3‑1) Scunthorpe United.

      Analysis of Chelsea

The home team plays its first match in this edition of the FA Cup with the intention of using the home advantage to get a positive result. They come to this match after a away win against Crystal Palace by (0‑3). Chelsea has won 6, tied 1 and lost 3 of the last 10 home matches. Their offense has scored consistently, as they have scored goals in 7 of the last 10 matches. In 15 matches, they have conceded the first goal 5 times and have never been able to turn the score around.

Chelsea comes motivated for this match after a victory away home by 0-3 against Crystal Palace. Oscar, Willian and Diego Costa scored the goals of victory. Diego Costa will be the most offensive reference of the home team, and hasn’t been excellent in the finishing, adding only six goals scored in the Premier League. Hazard will be the player with more freedom on the pitch, using his dribbling and acceleration skills to create difficulty on the defense of the "enemy". It’s foreseeable that the midfield will be composed of Obi Mikel, Fàbregas and Oscar. The Brazilian will be the forward player in the intermediate line.

      Analysis of Scunthorpe

The away team comes to this stage of the FA Cup (3rd Round) after havinf played in the previous rounds against: Leyton Orient and Southend United. In their last match, for the League One, they got a home tie against Wigan Athletic by (1‑1). In the last 10 away matches Scunthorpe United has won 4, tied 2 and lost 4. Defensive consistency hasn’t been their best feature, as they have conceded goals in 7 of the last 10 matches. In their away matches there is a tendency for goals, since 26 of the last 29 matches have ended with Over 1,5 goals and 21 out of 29 have ended with Over 2,5 goals. In 15 matches, they have conceded the first goal 5 times and have never been able to turn the score around.

Scunthorpe comes for this match after a draw at home, by 1-1, against Wigan. The Dutch van Veen is the main attack reference of the visiting team, however, he presents some gaps at the time of finishing. The Irish winger Madden is the best scorer of his team with eleven scored goals. The young Scot Jamie Ness is the player responsible for defining and conducting the attacks of Scunthorpe. For playing against an opponent with better quality, it’s predictable that the away team will choose to keep their block lower in an attempt to take advantage of, mainly, quick transitions.

      Betting suggestion:

The most likely scenario for this match will be the occurrence of some goals. Chelsea is going through a period of restructuring and nothing better than this match, against a much lower opponent, to regain confidence. Thus, it’s foreseeable that the goal of Scunthorpe can repeatedly suffer goals.
